Finding Opportunities

As a small business, there are several ways you can find Federal government contracting opportunities. Here are some effective methods:
  1. Federal Government Websites: Visit official government websites like SAM.gov (System for Award Management) to search for and identify contracting opportunities. This platform serves as central repositories for government procurement opportunities.
  2. Small Business Administration (SBA) Resources: Utilize resources provided by the SBA, such as their Subcontracting Network (SUB-Net) and the Dynamic Small Business Search (DSBS) database. SUB-Net helps small businesses find subcontracting opportunities with prime contractors, while DSBS allows you to create a profile that government agencies can search when seeking small business contractors.  Note: DSBS registration is a part of your SAM.gov registration.
  3. Agency-Specific Websites: Explore agency-specific websites relevant to your industry or area of expertise. Many government agencies post contracting opportunities on their individual websites, making it easier to target specific agencies for potential contracts.  Get started by visiting the Acquisition Forecast page.
  4. Networking and Relationship Building: Attend industry-specific conferences, seminars, and business matchmaking events where you can connect with government representatives, prime contractors, and other small businesses. Building relationships and networking can open doors to potential contracting opportunities.
  5. Set-Asides and Socioeconomic Programs: Be aware of set-aside programs and socioeconomic categories that may offer advantages for small businesses, such as the 8(a) Business Development Program, HUBZone program, Women-Owned Small Business (WOSB) program, and Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Small Business (SDVOSB) program. These programs allocate a portion of government contracts specifically for businesses in those categories.
  6. Contracting Assistance Programs: Take advantage of government contracting assistance programs like the Procurement Technical Assistance Centers (PTACs) and the SBA's SCORE program. These programs provide free or low-cost counseling, training, and resources to help small businesses navigate the government contracting process.
  7. Prime Contractor Subcontracting: Consider partnering with larger prime contractors as a subcontractor. Many prime contractors are required to include small businesses in their contracts, creating subcontracting opportunities for smaller firms. Refer to SUBNet above.
Remember to regularly monitor these sources, sign up for notifications, and be proactive in searching for opportunities that align with your capabilities and offerings. Persistence and continuous research will increase your chances of finding and securing Federal government contracting opportunities as a small business.
